Kids Classes

REVISED JUNIORS PROGRAM

TO THE MILD WINTER, WE HAVE MODIFIED THE SEASON TO START LATER, AND WE ARE OFFERING BOTH A FULL PROGRAM AND A SUNDAY-ONLY PROGRAM

During the 2017 - 2018 ski season, the Medicine Bow Nordic Association is offering to children ages 8 to 16 years old the opportunity to enjoy Nordic skiing and to become better skiers by skiing with other kids under the direction of qualified coaches.  This class is designed for every child to increase his or her enjoyment of skiing by learning to ski better. This is not a racing program, but children interested in racing can learn some techniques and also learn about local and regional races.

Who is Eligible?  Any child 8 to 16 years old who can ski at least a mile comfortably and who wants to have fun learning to ski better.  For young skiers who cannot ski this distance, we will be offering the Kid Ski class on 4 weekends in mid-winter.

Season:  The season will run from Tuesday, January 2nd through Tuesday, February 27th, 2018.

Practice Schedule:  (1) Full program, 3 practices per week.  Sundays from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.  Tuesday and Thursday practices will end at 5:15 later in the season when daylight lasts longer.   (2) Sunday-only program.  Sundays from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.  We are offering these practices especially for skiers on the Laramie Middle-School Nordic Ski Team who would like individual coaching to augment the coaching and skiing they receive during team practices.

Fee:  (1) Full program:  $157.00 per skier for 25 practice sessions.  (2) Sunday-only program:  $50.00 for 8 practices sessions.

Coaching:  Our head coach will be Ginger Shenefelt.  Ginger was an assistant coach with the Laramie Middle School program last year.  She majored in outdoor recreation in college and is enthusiastic about teaching children the joy of being outdoors.

Location:  Tie City Nordic ski trails.  Skiers will meet for every practice at the warming hut at the Tie City Trailhead, off of the Happy Jack Road (Wyoming Highway 210), 12 miles east of Laramie.

Equipment:  Skis, boots, and poles suitable for both classic and skate technique.  “Combi” skis and boots work well for both, especially for beginning and intermediate skiers.  Waxable skis are better than waxless skis; the latter are difficult to skate-ski on.  Every participant must provide his or her own equipment, which can be rented from Cross Country Connection (2nd & Ivinson, 721-2851).  Please be sure that your child comes to every practice with warm clothing, including mittens or gloves and a hat or hood, as well as a small snack.

Registration:   To register a skier in the junior program, scroll down to a registration form, fill out, and be sure to hit SUBMIT when you are done.  You can then go to the PayPal button below the form and pay online.  You must also complete a waiver (click here to download Activity Waiver.pdf  for each skier) and read MBNA's policy on disruptive behavior and be sure that your child understands it.  Please bring a completed a completed waiver form (and check made out to the Medicine Bow Nordic Association, if you haven't paid online) to the first practice.
